Folk Dances

Many folk dances are performed in this region. The baiga and Gond tribes are considered to be fond of dances and music. For them music is a gift from the God. Their dances are divided into two categories i.e. Social and religious dances.The religious dances are performed to get the blessing from God,to get rid of problem caused by the evils like Flood,famine and epidemic.  

In the religious dances there are Sua , Dashera, Doha and Sumran whereas in the social dances Karma, Reena, Saila, Bilma, Jharpad and Tapadi are very popular among the tribes.

Sua: This dance is performed widely on the occasion of Goura Marriage in the month of October and November.the specialty of this dance is that it is performed only by the female artist.  

Dashera: This is the foremost dance of the baiga tribe.This dance is performed during the festive season of Dussehra and Diwali.

Karma: It is a hereditary and social relevance dance. This dance is performed during the Vijayadashmi to end of the year.

Reena: This is a dance performed by female only. This is a competitive dance among different villages during the festive season of Diwali.

Saila: This is a male dominated dance.This dance is also a competitive dance like Reena. In this one group from one village goes to another and challenges another.

Bilma: The literal meaning of this word is           "Separation" . This dance is performed on the occasion of marriage. it is at the time of Departure of Barat.

Jharpat: This dance is performed while playing a game of asking and replying between two groups, each trying another to outnumber.

Parghoni: This dance is performed at the time of marriage by a combined group of boys and girls.In this dance a effigy of elephant is made which is used for dance purposes.
